PM Surya Ghar Last Date 2027: Is the Scheme Ending?

Short answer: the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana is approved till 31 March 2027 (the end of financial year 2026-27). As of October 2026, no extension has been officially notified. In Tamil Nadu there is a second clock: the ₹22,000 state top-up is reported to be limited to the first 1 lakh eligible homes, so it may run out even earlier.

If you want the full ₹1 lakh subsidy (₹78,000 + ₹22,000), the safe plan is to register and install by December 2026 or early January 2027.

Status as of 17 October 2026. We will update this page if MNRE or the Tamil Nadu government announces any change.

The Key Dates

Date What happens
Feb 2024 PM Surya Ghar launched, target 1 crore homes
5 Aug 2026 Tamil Nadu announces ₹22,000 state top-up in the Budget (registration cut-off for the top-up)
19 Sep 2026 G.O. (Ms) No. 102 issued for the Tamil Nadu top-up
31 Dec 2026 Reported end of the ALMM List-II (cell) exemption for PM Surya Ghar net-metering systems
31 Mar 2027 Scheme approval period ends (FY 2026-27)

Is the Scheme Really Ending? What We Know

  • Approved period: The scheme was approved to run up to FY 2026-27. Its total outlay is ₹75,021 crore.
  • Progress: News reports in October 2026 said about 60 lakh homes had benefited, against the 1 crore target. Official projections reported in September 2026 expected 85-90 lakh homes by March 2027, short of the target.
  • Extension talk: Some reports say the Centre is considering a 3-4 month extension and a successor scheme. Neither has been notified. Subsidy amounts after March 2027 are not guaranteed.
  • Not the same deadline: You may have seen "30 November 2026" in the news. That deadline is for old Phase-II rooftop programme claims, not for new PM Surya Ghar applications.

Our advice: treat 31 March 2027 as the real deadline. If an extension comes, it is a bonus, not a plan.

Why Waiting Until February Is Risky

Here is the typical timeline for a home in Cuddalore district:

Step Typical time
Site visit, design, quote 1 - 3 days
Portal registration + TNEB feasibility approval 1 - 2 weeks
Installation 1 - 3 days
Inspection + net meter installation 2 - 6 weeks
Subsidy credit after commissioning about 30 days
Total 6 - 10 weeks

Near every deadline, three queues grow at the same time: installers, TNEB inspections and net meter supply. A family that starts in late February can easily miss 31 March.

There is also a cost reason. A reported exemption that lets PM Surya Ghar systems use panels without ALMM List-II (approved Indian cells) ends on 31 December 2026. After that, eligible panels may cost more. Installing earlier can lock in today's prices.

The ₹22,000 Tamil Nadu Top-up: A Shorter Clock

Point Detail
Amount ₹5,000 (1kW), ₹10,000 (2kW), ₹22,000 (3kW and above)
Who Domestic TNEB connections registered on PM Surya Ghar from 5 Aug 2026
Limit Reported: first 1,00,000 eligible homes, about ₹50 crore
Paid by TEDA, by direct transfer after commissioning

With central + state together, a 3kW home can get ₹1,00,000 back. Full rules: ₹1 lakh solar subsidy in Tamil Nadu.

What to Do This Week

  1. Check your EB bill name. It must match your Aadhaar. Name transfer takes time, so start now if needed.
  2. Decide your size. 3kW for most homes (one AC, bill ₹1,500 - ₹3,500), 5kW for two-AC homes. See 1kW and 5kW units guides.
  3. Book a site visit with a registered vendor. Only installations by vendors registered on the PM Surya Ghar portal get the subsidy.
  4. Keep documents ready: Aadhaar, latest EB bill, bank passbook, property tax receipt.

Surya's Solar is a registered vendor on the official PM Surya Ghar portal with 150+ installations under the scheme and a 5/5 rating from 149 ratings on the portal. We handle registration, installation, TNEB liaison and subsidy follow-up. Local process details: PM Surya Ghar in Cuddalore.

Three Scenarios After March 2027

Nobody outside the government knows the final decision. Here is how each possibility affects you:

Scenario What it means for you
Scheme ends on 31 March 2027 Only systems commissioned (and claims filed) in time get ₹78,000. Late starters get nothing from the central scheme.
Short extension (reported 3-4 months) More time, but subsidy rates and rules could change, and the rush continues.
Successor scheme New rules, possibly a different subsidy amount. Past schemes have often reduced per-kW support over time.

In every scenario, a home that is commissioned before March 2027 is safe. That is the only option without risk.

6 Mistakes That Delay Subsidy Near Deadlines

  1. Name mismatch between Aadhaar, EB bill and bank account. Fix this first; it is the most common delay.
  2. Bank account not Aadhaar-seeded for direct transfers. Ask your bank to link it.
  3. Choosing an unregistered installer. Only vendors registered on the PM Surya Ghar portal can be selected, and only their installations get the subsidy.
  4. Non-DCR panels. The panels must be DCR (made with Indian cells). Check the model on the invoice. See Premier vs Adani for how to verify.
  5. Sanctioned load too low. If your system size is larger than your sanctioned load, TNEB may ask you to increase it first, which adds weeks.
  6. Waiting for the net meter without following up. Inspection and meter fixing are the slowest steps; your installer should track them for you.

Puducherry Homes

The central PM Surya Ghar scheme (up to ₹78,000) works the same way in Puducherry through PED, with the same 31 March 2027 approval period. The ₹22,000 top-up is a Tamil Nadu scheme and does not apply there. See solar cost in Puducherry.

How Much Does Waiting Cost You?

Every month without solar is another full EB bill. For a home paying ₹3,000 a month, waiting from October to March costs about ₹15,000 in bills, plus the risk of missing the ₹1 lakh subsidy entirely. Check your numbers with our calculator:

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the last date of PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana?

The scheme is approved till the end of financial year 2026-27, which is 31 March 2027. As of October 2026 no official extension has been notified.

Will PM Surya Ghar be extended after March 2027?

There are news reports that the Centre is considering a short extension and a successor scheme, but nothing has been officially notified as of October 2026. Do not plan your installation around an extension that may not come.

When should I apply to be safe?

Register and book your installation by December 2026 or early January 2027. The full process from registration to subsidy credit usually takes 6 to 10 weeks, and installer and TNEB queues get long near any deadline.

Is the Tamil Nadu ₹22,000 top-up also ending?

The Tamil Nadu top-up (G.O. 102) is reported to be limited to the first 1 lakh eligible homes and a fixed budget, so it can run out before March 2027. It applies to registrations from 5 August 2026.

What happens if my application is pending on 31 March 2027?

The rules for pending applications after the end date have not been announced. That uncertainty is the main reason to finish installation and commissioning well before March.
