5kW Solar Panel: Units Per Day & Month in Tamil Nadu

5kW Solar Panel: Units Per Day & Month in Tamil Nadu

Short answer: a 5kW solar system produces about 20 to 25 units a day in Tamil Nadu. That is 600 to 750 units a month and roughly 7,200 to 8,500 units a year. It comfortably runs a home with two ACs, and it qualifies for the full ₹1 lakh subsidy.

5kW Solar Units at a Glance

Period Units from 5kW (Tamil Nadu)
Per day (average) 20 - 25 units
Per day (clear summer day) 25 - 27 units
Per day (cloudy monsoon day) 15 - 19 units
Per month (average) 600 - 750 units
Per TNEB bill (2 months) 1,200 - 1,500 units
Per year 7,200 - 8,500 units

The math: 5 kW × 5.2 peak sun hours × 0.78 performance ratio ≈ 20.3 units on an average day, rising past 25 in clear summer weather. A clean, shade-free, well-wired system on an elevated structure stays at the top of the range.

Month by Month (Tamil Nadu Seasons)

Season Months Units per day Units per month
Summer March - May 25 - 27 750 - 820
Southwest monsoon June - September 21 - 24 640 - 720
Northeast monsoon October - December 16 - 19 480 - 570
Winter January - February 21 - 23 600 - 650

Summer, when your AC bill is highest, is exactly when 5kW produces the most. Extra units go to the grid through your net meter and are adjusted against your bill.

What a 5kW System Can Run

Load Approx. units per day
Two 1.5 ton inverter ACs (about 8 hours each) 12 - 16
Refrigerator (double door) 1.2 - 1.8
Lights, fans, TV, Wi-Fi 2 - 3
Washing machine, mixer, iron 1 - 2
Water pump (1 HP, 30-45 minutes) 0.5 - 0.8
Total about 17 - 24 units

This is why 5kW is the usual choice for 3BHK and 4BHK homes, two-AC families, joint families and homes planning an EV. If you have only one AC, 3kW is usually enough.

Roof Space and Panels

  • Panels: about nine panels of 550-580 watts (older designs used 15-16 panels of 330 watts).
  • Shade-free roof area: about 350 to 500 square feet.
  • Structure: on Cuddalore's coast we use a raised hot-dip galvanized structure that keeps panels cooler (more units) and lets you use the terrace below. See best solar structure for coastal Tamil Nadu.
  • Connection: a 5kW system usually works on single phase, but if your house load is high TNEB may suggest three phase. Read single phase to 3-phase upgrade.

5kW Price After ₹1 Lakh Subsidy (2026)

Amount
Typical market price (on-grid, installed) ₹3,00,000 - ₹3,30,000
PM Surya Ghar central subsidy ₹78,000
Tamil Nadu top-up (G.O. 102, eligible homes) ₹22,000
Approximate real cost ₹2,00,000 - ₹2,30,000

Savings

At 650 units a month, a 5kW system can cut a high summer bill of ₹5,000 - ₹7,000 down to a few hundred rupees, depending on your slab. Typical payback after the ₹1 lakh subsidy is around 3 to 4 years, and the panels keep producing for 25 years.

5kW vs 3kW: Which Should You Pick?

3kW 5kW
Units per day 12 - 15 20 - 25
Best for 1 AC, 2BHK, bill ₹1,500 - ₹3,500 2 ACs, 3-4BHK, bill ₹4,000 - ₹7,000
Total subsidy ₹1,00,000 ₹1,00,000
Roof space 220 - 300 sq ft 350 - 500 sq ft

How to Check Your 5kW System Is Performing

Most inverters today come with a mobile app or a display showing "Today's generation" and "Total generation". Check it once a week:

  • On a clear sunny day a healthy 5kW system should show about 22-27 units by evening.
  • On a cloudy monsoon day 12-19 units is normal.
  • Monthly total should land roughly in the season range from the table above.

If a clear day gives under 18 units, something is wrong. Compare a few sunny days before you worry, then look at the reasons below.

6 Reasons a 5kW System Gives Fewer Units

  1. Dust and salt on panels. On the Cuddalore coast a thin salty film can cut output by 5-15%. A plain-water wash every 2-4 weeks fixes it. See solar maintenance guide.
  2. New shade. A coconut tree that grew, a neighbour's new floor or a water tank can shade one panel and pull down the whole string. Read solar shadow analysis.
  3. Grid voltage trips. In areas with high grid voltage, on-grid inverters switch off for safety during peak sun, losing your best hours. A hybrid system or a TNEB complaint can solve it.
  4. Low panel tilt or wrong direction. Panels should face south with about a 10-15° tilt in Tamil Nadu. Flat-laid panels collect dust and lose output.
  5. Undersized or overheating inverter. A 5kW array needs an inverter sized and ventilated correctly; a hot inverter cuts power ("derating").
  6. Loose or poor DC connections. Cheap connectors corrode in coastal air and add losses (and fire risk). Read DC cable quality.

On-Grid or Hybrid for a 5kW Home?

On-grid 5kW Hybrid 5kW (with battery)
Works during power cut No (shuts down for safety) Yes, runs selected loads
Typical extra cost - ₹1.5 - 3 lakh more for lithium batteries
Subsidy Eligible Grid-connected hybrid reported eligible; battery not subsidised
Best for Lowest bill, fastest payback Areas with frequent cuts, home offices

For most Cuddalore homes on-grid gives the best return. Choose hybrid only if power cuts really disrupt your life. Compare in detail: on-grid vs hybrid solar in Tamil Nadu.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many units does a 5kW solar system produce per day?

About 20 to 25 units a day in Tamil Nadu on average, with 25-27 units on clear summer days and 15-19 units on cloudy northeast monsoon days.

How many units does 5kW solar produce in a month?

About 600 to 750 units a month, or 1,200 to 1,500 units in one two-month TNEB billing cycle.

Can a 5kW solar system run 2 ACs?

Yes. Two 1.5 ton inverter ACs running about 8 hours a day use roughly 12-16 units, and a 5kW system makes 20-25 units, leaving enough for the rest of the house during the day. At night the grid supplies power and the net meter balances it.

How much roof space does a 5kW solar system need?

About 350 to 500 square feet of shade-free roof, depending on panel wattage and structure design. Around nine 550-580 watt panels are typical.

What subsidy does a 5kW system get in Tamil Nadu?

The same as 3kW: up to ₹1,00,000 (₹78,000 PM Surya Ghar + ₹22,000 Tamil Nadu top-up for eligible homes). Subsidy does not increase above 3kW.
