Average Electricity Bill in Tamil Nadu (By Home Size, 2026)

Short answer: a typical 2BHK home in Tamil Nadu with one AC pays roughly ₹900-1,500 per two-month bill in the cooler months and ₹2,500-4,250 in summer. Homes without an AC that stay under 500 units (per two months) often pay only a few hundred rupees, thanks to the 200 free units introduced in May 2026. The real jump happens above 500 units, where bills can double. Here are typical numbers by home size.

Bills are bimonthly. Slab rates below are approximate (the same figures used in our TNEB slab rates guide); always confirm with your own TNPDCL bill.
Typical Units and Bills by Home Type (Two-Month Cycle)
| Home | Typical units (2 months) | Approx. bill (2 months) | Approx. per month |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1BHK, no AC | 150 - 250 | ₹100 - ₹350 | ₹50 - ₹175 |
| 2BHK, no AC | 250 - 400 | ₹325 - ₹1,000 | ₹160 - ₹500 |
| 2BHK, 1 AC (cool months) | 380 - 480 | ₹900 - ₹1,500 | ₹450 - ₹750 |
| 2BHK, 1 AC (summer) | 550 - 750 | ₹2,450 - ₹4,250 | ₹1,225 - ₹2,125 |
| 3BHK, 2 ACs (summer) | 800 - 1,200 | ₹4,650 - ₹8,850 | ₹2,325 - ₹4,425 |
| Large home / joint family, 3+ ACs | 1,200 - 1,800 | ₹8,850 - ₹15,450 | ₹4,425 - ₹7,725 |
Bills include an approximate fixed charge of about ₹100-150. Your actual bill depends on appliances, family size, and how many hours the AC runs.
How the Slabs Create These Numbers
If you use 500 units or less (per two months):
- 0 - 200 units: free
- 201 - 400 units: about ₹4.50 per unit
- 401 - 500 units: about ₹6.00 per unit
If you cross 500 units:
- Only 0 - 100 units free
- 101 - 400: about ₹4.50 · 401 - 500: about ₹6.00 · 501 - 600: about ₹8.00 · 601 - 800: about ₹9.00 · 801 - 1,000: about ₹10.00 · above 1,000: about ₹11.00
Worked examples
- 350 units: 150 × ₹4.50 = ₹675 + fixed charge ≈ ₹775
- 480 units: 200 × ₹4.50 + 80 × ₹6.00 = ₹1,380 + fixed ≈ ₹1,480
- 750 units: 300 × ₹4.50 + 100 × ₹6 + 100 × ₹8 + 150 × ₹9 = ₹4,100 + fixed ≈ ₹4,250
- 1,000 units: ₹1,350 + ₹600 + ₹800 + ₹1,800 + ₹2,000 = ₹6,550 + fixed ≈ ₹6,700
Notice the cliff: going from 480 to 750 units (about 56% more electricity) almost triples the bill. That is why summer AC use hurts so much. Read why the EB bill is high in summer.
What Uses the Most Units in a Tamil Nadu Home?
| Appliance | Typical units per two months |
|---|---|
| 1.5 ton AC, 8 hours a day (summer) | 300 - 480 |
| Refrigerator | 60 - 90 |
| Water heater / geyser (daily use) | 60 - 120 |
| Water pump (1 HP) | 30 - 60 |
| Fans (4) and lights | 80 - 120 |
| TV, Wi-Fi, laptops | 30 - 60 |
| Washing machine, iron, mixer, induction | 30 - 80 |
The AC is the biggest single factor. One AC running 8 hours a day can push a 2BHK from the "safe" 400-unit range to 750+. See how many units an AC uses per day.
Is My Bill "Normal"? A Quick Self-Check
- Find your units on the bill (current reading minus previous reading).
- Compare with the table above for your home type and season.
- If your units are 30%+ above the typical range with no new appliance, check for:
- An old refrigerator or AC (low star rating)
- A water pump running too long, or a leaking tank float valve
- Earth leakage in old wiring (an electrician can test this)
- A wrong meter reading (compare the meter display with the bill)

5 Cheap Ways to Stay Under the 500-Unit Cliff
If your bimonthly units sit just above 500, small changes can save hundreds of rupees:
- Set the AC to 24-26°C instead of 18-20°C. Each degree warmer saves roughly 5-6% of AC power.
- Use a timer or sleep mode so the AC switches off in the early morning.
- Clean AC filters every 2 weeks in summer; dirty filters make the compressor run longer.
- Run the water pump with a timer and check the tank float valve for overflow.
- Replace old tube lights and fans with LED lights and BLDC fans; they use half the power or less.
For homes well above 500 units, these help but solar is what really changes the bill.
Average Bill vs Solar: What Changes
| Home | Units (2 months, summer) | Bill without solar | Solar size | Units from solar (2 months) | Bill with solar* |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2BHK, 1 AC | 650 | ≈ ₹3,300 | 3kW | 720 - 900 | close to fixed charge |
| 3BHK, 2 ACs | 1,000 | ≈ ₹6,700 | 5kW | 1,200 - 1,500 | close to fixed charge |
| 2BHK, no AC | 350 | ≈ ₹775 | 1-2kW | 240 - 600 | small saving |
*With an on-grid system and net meter, under current net metering rules. The bigger your bill, the faster solar pays back, which is why AC homes with 500+ unit bills gain the most. Size yours with the solar calculator or our guide how much solar for a ₹5,000 bill.
With the ₹1 Lakh Subsidy, the Math Is Better Than Ever
A 3kW system now gets up to ₹1,00,000 in subsidy (₹78,000 PM Surya Ghar + ₹22,000 Tamil Nadu top-up for eligible homes). For a 2BHK home with one AC paying about ₹1,500-2,000 a month on average across the year, the payback is roughly 4-5 years, and faster for bigger bills.
