How Much Roof Space for Solar? 1kW to 10kW (Sq Ft Table)

Short answer: in Tamil Nadu, plan for about 80-100 sq ft of shade-free roof per kW. A 3kW system needs about 250-300 sq ft, a 5kW system about 400-500 sq ft, and a 10kW system about 700-1,000 sq ft, using modern 540-620 W panels. The exact space depends on panel wattage, the roof shape, shade from water tanks and coconut trees, and whether you use a raised structure.

Roof Space Table: 1kW to 10kW

System Panels (540-580 W) Shade-free roof needed Units per day
1kW 2 80 - 100 sq ft 4 - 5
2kW 4 170 - 200 sq ft 8 - 10
3kW 5 - 6 250 - 300 sq ft 12 - 15
4kW 7 - 8 330 - 400 sq ft 16 - 20
5kW 9 - 10 400 - 500 sq ft 20 - 25
10kW 17 - 19 700 - 1,000 sq ft 40 - 50

Includes gaps for cleaning access. A typical 2BHK terrace in Cuddalore is 600-900 sq ft, so most homes can fit 3-5kW if shade is managed.

Units per size: solar units per day: 1kW to 5kW.

Panel Size: How Big Is One Panel?

Panel type Approx. size Area
440 W (older Mono PERC) about 1.9 m x 1.13 m about 23 sq ft
540 - 580 W about 2.27 m x 1.13 m about 27 - 28 sq ft
600 - 620 W (TOPCon) about 2.38 m x 1.13 m about 29 sq ft

Higher-wattage panels produce more power from the same roof, so on a small terrace they let you fit more kW. Compare panel types: bifacial vs monocrystalline.

Why "Shade-Free" Matters More Than Area

Even a small shadow can cut output, because panels in a string are connected together. Common shade sources on Tamil Nadu terraces:

  • Overhead water tanks (Sintex tanks)
  • Staircase head rooms and lift rooms
  • Coconut and neem trees
  • Neighbouring taller buildings
  • Parapet walls and dish antennas

In winter (December-January) the sun is lower in the south, so shadows are longer than in summer. A proper check looks at shade across the year: solar shadow analysis guide.

Which Direction Should Panels Face?

In Tamil Nadu, panels should face south with a tilt of about 10-15 degrees. Flat terraces make this easy. East-west layouts also work with a small loss, which helps on narrow or oddly shaped roofs.

Raised Structure vs Low Structure

Low structure (1-2 ft) Raised structure (6-8 ft)
Terrace use Mostly blocked Usable underneath
Cooling effect on top floor Some Good shade on roof slab
Shade from parapet / tanks More likely Panels sit above many shadows
Cost Lower Higher (more steel)
Wind load Lower Needs stronger design for cyclones

Most families in Cuddalore prefer a raised, hot-dip galvanized structure so they can still use the terrace. See best solar structure for coastal Tamil Nadu.

Small Terrace? 6 Ways to Fit More Solar

  1. Use 580-620 W panels instead of 440 W.
  2. Build over the staircase room or water tank with a raised frame.
  3. Move the water tank to one side or a lower platform if possible.
  4. Portrait vs landscape layout: try both on the drawing; one often fits an extra panel.
  5. East-west split across a narrow terrace.
  6. Bifacial panels on a raised frame over a white-painted roof get a few extra units from reflected light.

If space allows only 2kW, it can still give a big saving and a ₹70,000 subsidy. See 2kW solar system.

Sloped, Sheet and Tile Roofs

  • Concrete flat terrace: easiest, most common in Tamil Nadu.
  • Metal sheet roof: panels can be fixed with rail and clamp systems if the purlins are strong.
  • Mangalore tile roof: usually needs a separate frame or an elevated structure; tiles break easily.
  • Asbestos sheet: not recommended to drill; use a separate frame.

Roof Load: Is My Roof Strong Enough?

Panels and a standard structure add about 15-20 kg per square metre, which a normal RCC roof handles easily. Older roofs with cracks or leaks should be repaired and waterproofed before installation, because removing panels later costs money.

Quick Self-Check Before Calling an Installer

  1. Measure your terrace length and breadth (in feet).
  2. Subtract the area of the water tank, staircase room and any space that gets shade after 9 AM or before 4 PM.
  3. Divide the remaining area by 90 to get a rough maximum kW.
  4. Compare with your EB bill using the solar savings calculator, and check your subsidy with the eligibility checker.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much roof space is needed for a 3kW solar system?

About 250 to 300 square feet of shade-free roof with modern 540-620 W panels, or up to about 350 sq ft with a raised structure and walking space for cleaning.

How much space does 1kW of solar need?

Roughly 80 to 100 square feet per kW including gaps for cleaning and maintenance, depending on panel wattage and roof shape.

What is the size of one solar panel?

A typical 540-580 W panel is about 2.27 m x 1.13 m (about 7.5 ft x 3.7 ft), roughly 27-28 sq ft. Newer 600-620 W panels are slightly bigger.

Can I install solar on a small terrace?

Yes. Use the highest-wattage panels, a raised structure over the water tank or staircase room, and a careful layout. Many small terraces fit 2-3kW.

Can I still use my terrace after installing solar?

Yes, with a raised structure (usually 6-8 feet high) you can still dry clothes, keep plants and walk underneath, and the panels shade the roof, keeping the top floor cooler.

My terrace has a water tank in the middle. Can I still install solar?

Usually yes. We place panels on the sunniest side, keep a gap from the tank's shadow, or build a raised frame that lifts the panels above the tank. Moving the tank to the north edge of the terrace often frees the best space, because shadows fall towards the north for most of the year.
