Solar With Battery Backup: Price in Tamil Nadu (2026)

Short answer: in Tamil Nadu, a 3kW solar system with battery backup costs about ₹2.6 to 3.2 lakh with a tubular battery bank, or ₹3.2 to 4 lakh with a 5kWh lithium battery (2026 market range). The solar part still gets the PM Surya Ghar subsidy if the system is grid-connected, but the battery is never subsidised. If your area has only occasional short power cuts, a plain on-grid system (₹1.8-2.1 lakh) gives a much faster payback.
Prices are market averages as of October 2026, not our quotes. Battery prices vary a lot by brand, chemistry and capacity; we give a written quote after a free site visit.
Price Table: Solar With and Without Battery (2026)
| System | Typical installed price | Subsidy (eligible TN home) | Backup in power cut |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3kW on-grid (no battery) | ₹1.8 - 2.1 lakh | Up to ₹1,00,000 | None |
| 3kW hybrid + tubular battery bank | ₹2.6 - 3.2 lakh | Solar part reported eligible | Essential loads, 4-6 hours |
| 3kW hybrid + 5kWh lithium (LFP) | ₹3.2 - 4 lakh | Solar part reported eligible | Essential loads, 6-8 hours |
| 5kW hybrid + 5kWh lithium (LFP) | ₹4.5 - 5.5 lakh | Solar part reported eligible | Essential loads + 1 AC for a short time |
| Off-grid (no TNEB connection) | varies | Not eligible | Full home, battery sized for it |
The difference between on-grid and hybrid comes from three parts: the hybrid inverter (costlier than an on-grid one), the battery bank, and extra wiring for a separate "backup" distribution board.
Why Battery Prices Vary So Much
1. Battery chemistry
| Tubular lead-acid | Lithium (LFP) | |
|---|---|---|
| Upfront cost | Lower | Higher (roughly 2-3x per usable kWh) |
| Usable capacity | About 50% of rated | About 80-90% of rated |
| Life | 4 - 6 years typical | 8 - 10+ years typical |
| Maintenance | Distilled water top-up, ventilation | None |
| Space and weight | Large and heavy | Compact, wall or rack mounted |
Lithium looks expensive, but because you can use more of its capacity and it lasts about twice as long, the 10-year cost is often lower for homes that use the battery every day. Tubular batteries make sense when cuts are rare and budget is tight.
Battery price by size (2026 market range)
| Battery | Stores (usable) | Approx. price | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 150Ah 12V solar tubular | about 0.9 kWh | ₹13,000 - ₹18,000 | Common for small backup; 2-4 needed for a hybrid bank |
| 200Ah 12V solar tubular | about 1.2 kWh | ₹17,000 - ₹23,000 | Longer backup per battery |
| 5kWh lithium (LFP) pack | about 4.5 kWh | ₹1.1 - 1.6 lakh | Wall or rack mounted, no maintenance |
| 10kWh lithium (LFP) pack | about 9 kWh | ₹2 - 3 lakh | Larger homes, longer cuts |
Usable energy assumes about 50% depth of discharge for tubular and about 90% for lithium. Prices vary by brand, warranty and voltage; confirm in a written quote.
2. Battery size (kWh)
Battery capacity is measured in kWh (units). A 5kWh battery stores about 5 units. If your essential load is 600 watts, that is roughly 7-8 hours of backup on a lithium battery.
3. Inverter type
A hybrid inverter manages solar, battery and grid together. Good hybrids also handle voltage fluctuation, which is common in parts of Panruti and rural Cuddalore. See voltage fluctuation and hybrid solar.
How Much Backup Do You Really Need?
Most families do not need the whole house on battery. Make a list of essential loads:
| Load | Typical watts |
|---|---|
| 4 ceiling fans (BLDC) | 120 - 140 W |
| 6 LED lights | 60 - 80 W |
| Refrigerator | 100 - 200 W (average) |
| TV + set-top box | 100 - 150 W |
| Wi-Fi router, phone chargers | 30 - 50 W |
| Total essential load | about 450 - 650 W |
At about 600 W, a 5kWh lithium battery gives roughly 7 hours, which covers almost any TNEB cut. An AC (1.2-1.5 kW) would empty the same battery in about 3 hours, so we usually keep ACs off the backup board. Read can a 1.5 ton AC run on solar.
Subsidy With a Battery: What Exactly Applies
- The PM Surya Ghar central subsidy (up to ₹78,000) and the Tamil Nadu top-up (up to ₹22,000 for eligible homes) are for the grid-connected solar capacity. Grid-connected hybrid systems are reported as eligible; pure off-grid systems are not.
- The battery, its rack and backup wiring are not subsidised.
- Panels must still be DCR and installed by a registered vendor.
So a 3kW hybrid with lithium battery at about ₹3.6 lakh could come down to about ₹2.6 lakh after the full ₹1 lakh subsidy. Full rules: ₹1 lakh solar subsidy in Tamil Nadu. Check your home in 30 seconds with the subsidy eligibility checker.
When Battery Backup Is Worth It (and When It Is Not)
Worth it if:
- You face frequent or long power cuts (rural areas, monsoon season, cyclone-hit areas).
- Someone at home works from home or a family member needs medical equipment.
- Your voltage is unstable and appliances keep tripping.
- You already spend on a regular inverter-UPS and its batteries every few years.
Not worth it if:
- Cuts in your area are short and rare (many town areas in Cuddalore).
- Your main goal is the lowest EB bill and fastest payback. Net metering already works like a free "battery": TNEB stores your extra daytime units.
Many families take a middle path: on-grid solar now for the subsidy and savings, plus their existing home UPS for cuts. A hybrid can be added later. Compare both in on-grid vs hybrid solar.
Payback: On-Grid vs Hybrid
| 3kW on-grid | 3kW hybrid + lithium | |
|---|---|---|
| Price after ₹1 lakh subsidy | about ₹80,000 - ₹1,10,000 | about ₹2.2 - 3 lakh |
| Yearly bill saving (AC home) | about ₹25,000 - ₹30,000 | about the same |
| Payback | about 3 - 4.5 years | about 7 - 11 years |
| Extra benefit | - | Power during cuts |
The battery does not save much extra money because TNEB net metering already credits your surplus. You pay for the battery for comfort and reliability, not for savings. See the full method in solar payback after ₹1 lakh subsidy.
Battery Safety and Care in Coastal Tamil Nadu
- Keep batteries indoors, in a shaded, ventilated spot, away from kitchen heat. Heat shortens battery life.
- Lithium batteries need a proper BMS (battery management system) and must match the inverter's approved battery list.
- Tubular batteries need water top-up every 2-3 months and a ventilated corner for gases.
- Above flood level: in low-lying parts of Cuddalore, mount the battery and inverter above any monsoon water level. See solar panels in rain and cyclones.
- Check warranty in years and cycles, and who services it locally.
