10kW Solar System: Price, Units & Who Needs It (TN 2026)

Short answer: a 10kW solar system produces about 40 to 50 units a day in Tamil Nadu (1,200-1,500 units a month) and costs about ₹5 to 6.5 lakh installed in 2026. It suits large homes with 3-4 ACs or an EV, joint families, and small businesses like clinics, shops, offices and schools. Homes get the same capped subsidy as 3kW (up to ₹1 lakh), while businesses get no PM Surya Ghar subsidy but can claim tax depreciation benefits.

10kW at a Glance

Point 10kW system (Tamil Nadu)
Units per day 40 - 50
Units per month 1,200 - 1,500
Units per two-month TNEB bill 2,400 - 3,000
Units per year 14,500 - 17,000
Panels 17 - 19 panels of 540 - 580 W
Shade-free roof area 700 - 1,000 sq ft
Inverter Usually one 10kW three-phase on-grid inverter
Connection Usually three phase
Typical installed price ₹5 - 6.5 lakh (market range)

The math: 10 kW × 5.2 peak sun hours × 0.78 ≈ 40.5 units on an average day, rising to 50+ on clear summer days.

Who Needs a 10kW System?

User Typical two-month units Why 10kW
Large home, 3-4 ACs 2,000 - 3,000 Covers the highest slabs (₹10-11 per unit)
Home with EV charging 1,800 - 2,800 Daily EV charging adds 6-12 units
Joint family, two kitchens 1,800 - 2,500 Many appliances running in the daytime
Clinic or small hospital 2,500 - 4,000 Daytime load: AC, equipment, lights
Shop, showroom, office 2,000 - 3,500 Business hours match solar hours
School or coaching centre 2,000 - 3,000 Daytime use, long-term budget savings

If your two-month units are under about 1,500, a 5kW system is usually enough. Check with our sizing guide.

10kW Price Breakdown (2026, Market Range)

Component Share of cost
Solar panels (17-19 × 540-580 W) about 45 - 55%
Three-phase on-grid inverter about 12 - 18%
Hot-dip galvanized structure about 10 - 15%
DC/AC cables, protection boxes, earthing, lightning arrester about 8 - 12%
Installation, TNEB process, net meter about 5 - 10%

Why the price range is wide (₹5-6.5 lakh):

  • DCR vs non-DCR panels: subsidy homes must use DCR panels, which cost more. A business that does not need subsidy can use non-DCR panels and pay less.
  • TOPCon vs Mono PERC: TOPCon gives more units in heat but costs a little more.
  • Structure height: raised structures (so the terrace stays usable) need more steel.
  • Inverter brand: premium European brands cost more than good Chinese or Indian brands. See best on-grid solar inverters.

Subsidy: Homes vs Businesses

Residential home Business / commercial
PM Surya Ghar central subsidy Up to ₹78,000 (capped at 3kW) Not eligible
Tamil Nadu top-up (G.O. 102) Up to ₹22,000 (eligible homes) Not eligible
Tax benefit None Accelerated depreciation on solar assets (ask your auditor)
Panels required DCR Any ALMM-listed panel

For a home, the ₹1 lakh subsidy makes a 10kW system cost about ₹4-5.5 lakh net. For a business, the depreciation benefit can reduce tax significantly in the first years. Read commercial solar tax benefits and ₹1 lakh solar subsidy in Tamil Nadu.

Savings and Payback

A home or business using 2,400+ units per two months pays the ₹10-11 per unit top slabs on much of it. A 10kW system can cut a two-month bill of ₹20,000-28,000 down to a small fraction.

Example Two-month bill without solar Approx. yearly saving Net cost Payback
Large home, 2,400 units / two months about ₹22,000 about ₹1.2 - 1.3 lakh ₹4 - 5.5 lakh (after ₹1 lakh subsidy) about 3 - 4.5 years
Small business (commercial tariff) varies by tariff depends on tariff and daytime use ₹5 - 6.5 lakh (before tax benefit) often 4 - 6 years

These are estimates using approximate domestic slab rates; commercial tariffs differ. See the full method in solar payback after ₹1 lakh subsidy.

Technical Points Before You Install 10kW

  1. Three-phase connection. Most 10kW systems use a three-phase inverter. If you are on single phase, TNEB will ask for an upgrade first. See single phase to 3-phase upgrade.
  2. Sanctioned load. Your sanctioned load must support the system size; a load increase may be needed.
  3. Roof strength and layout. 17-19 panels and a raised structure add weight and wind load; the roof must be checked, and the structure must be designed for coastal wind.
  4. Shading. Larger arrays are more likely to have part-shading from water tanks or nearby buildings. Plan string layout carefully: shadow analysis guide.
  5. Earthing and protection. Bigger systems need properly sized surge protection and three separate earthing pits: earthing guide.
  6. Monitoring. Use the inverter's app to track daily units; a 10kW system should show 40+ units on a sunny day.

10kW On-Grid or Hybrid?

For most large homes and businesses, on-grid gives the best return. A hybrid 10kW system with batteries makes sense only if power cuts disrupt critical work (clinics, server rooms). Batteries for that size are expensive, so many businesses choose on-grid solar plus a small UPS for critical loads. Compare: on-grid vs hybrid solar.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many units does a 10kW solar system produce per day?

About 40 to 50 units a day in Tamil Nadu on average, which is 1,200 to 1,500 units a month and roughly 14,500 to 17,000 units a year.

What is the price of a 10kW solar system in Tamil Nadu?

About ₹5 to 6.5 lakh installed for an on-grid system in 2026 (market range), depending on panel type (DCR or non-DCR, TOPCon or Mono PERC), structure and inverter.

Is there a subsidy for a 10kW solar system?

For a residential home, yes, but it is capped: up to ₹78,000 central plus ₹22,000 Tamil Nadu top-up for eligible homes, the same as a 3kW system. Commercial systems do not get PM Surya Ghar subsidy, but businesses can claim accelerated depreciation tax benefits.

How much roof space does a 10kW system need?

About 700 to 1,000 square feet of shade-free roof, usually 17-19 panels of 540-580 watts.

Do I need three-phase power for 10kW solar?

Usually yes. A 10kW system normally uses a three-phase inverter, and your sanctioned load must be high enough. TNEB may ask for a load upgrade first.
